More than five decades ago I patrolled the rivers of Vietnam. Four decades later, I told my stories. I was recently invited to participate in an interview about Vietnam War literature that influenced me. The top five books t are listed, but there were also countless other narratives that I learned from, including the World War I British poets, Graves, Sassoon, and Owen. Poetry is truly the eye to our soul.

The best Vietnam war books that explore waste and loss
By Wendell Affield

Hello Wendell, I just finished reading “Muddy Jungle Rivers”. It is an amazing book. I read a lot of history books. I find your book to be one of the finest personal memoirs of warfare that I’ve read, especially from the viewpoint of a young Navy Petty Officer serving his country in such a difficult and dangerous mission. I thank you for your service and especially for sharing your experiences while serving in the MRF. My brother-in-law served three tours in Vietnam. He served with TF 117 MRF in the Mekong Delta and TF 116 in the Danang area. Your book gives an excellent personal perspective of the day-to-day life and trials of a young sailor assigned to the Riverine Navy. God Bless you and all your fellow Vietnam Veteran’s that so valiantly served our great country…
